I think the best rule of thumb when you are visiting a job site is: bring your blue tape, second to your tape measure. It is not only helpful for you but incredibly helpful for clients who sometimes have difficulty visualizing the size, width, space, or shape of furniture and cabinets. On this awesome Saturday I am taking my trusty blue tap to this apartment to lay out all the cabinets on the walls so client can help visualize the layout of her uppers, lowers, and range.
